So my husband and I are going out. Now this is not a completely uncommon occurrence, we aren’t hermits, we do go out for coffee, occasionally dinner and a movie but on Sunday we are going OUT out.
The inevitable question is what the hell am I going to wear?
Setting the Scene
We are having drinks here:
then dinner here:
then going to see Lake Street Dive here:
To some this might be a normal weekend for you but 3 pretty fancy places in one night is not a normal thing for me. I have a casual lifestyle and so because of this I have a relatively casual wardrobe. This is further complicated by the fact that it might be snowing at the weekend and if not snowing then windy and rainy.
The Potentials

This outfit looked much nicer in my head than in real life! Its a sheer long sleeve top under a a black shift dress, but because of the weather I would have to wear it with tights and boots. The top looked awkward and bunched under the dress and the the all black looked like I was cosplaying as Wednesday Adams.
I feel like like the 2 light coloured pieces are a bit risky given the weather and the tights and boots are slightly detracting from the overall aesthetics but at least I would be comfortable.

I really like this outfit with wide culottes juxtaposing the tight plisse top but I just could not get the top to sit right under the trousers as it is so long and thick. I am going to play around with it thought and hopefully I can find a combination like this that works.

I actually love this outfit and it is what I wore to the last concert I went to. With a black bra under the sheer top it felt a little sexy whilst still being completely covered up but I couldn’t do those shoes in this weather and I am struggling with shoes and these trousers during winter to find something they work with.

I LOVE this outfit, its very sleek whilst also being a little fun with the leopard print trousers but the they are just a teeny bit long which is not usually a problem but they would get wet in all the puddles and no one wants their trousers to act as a sponge for gross city centre street water. I will however definitely wear this outfit soon.
The Final Outfit
So the final outfit I went with is:
a flowy full length nude satin skirt I got preloved from Vinted and rolled up the waistband so it hit more mid calf
a thin cable knit cream cardigan I wore backwards as a jumper1
black tights
brown lug soled Chelsea boots
a delicate silver chain
a big puffer jacket
Verdict
I loved the satin skirt with the knitted top. I saw a very stylish woman cross the street a year or so ago wearing a similar satin skirt and big jumper and I went on the hunt for a preloved satin skirt so I could copy her style. Because I had turned up the waist band so it would be a little shorter I did feel myself fussing with it a little through the night to make sure it was sitting ok.
I was really happy with how the cardi looked backward, showing a little bit of skin at the back and giving an almost boat neck effect at the front. I am looking forward to wearing this with jeans as well more casually.
I did not like the way the boots looked. I thought they made the whole outfit read frumpy but when you live in Scotland during the winter you sometimes have to compromise with the weather. I dont really have any slimmer more feminine boots and I think a pair like these would be a good addition to my wardrobe next year.
Another thing I keep thinking about is that the outfit is maybe not something that in the past we would have classed as ‘flattering’. I try not to focus on this type of thing and wear what I feel good in flattering or not, but it is sometimes hard to shake these thoughts when you grew up in the 90s and early 00s.
Oh and Lake Street Dive were FABULOUS!

Please leave me a comment and tell me what do other people wear on a night out to dinner and a concert in the winter??
my tip if you are going to do this is unpick the label as the label is so much itchier at the front than it is at the back
Weather drives me insane and the majority of the time I just wear whatever shoes I want regardless and deal with being freezing later 😅 my go to is always jeans, a plain tshirt and an oversized blazer with either loafers or low heeled boots, dressed up with accessories to smarten the look!
What to wear out when the weather is bad is soooo hard! The footwear choice is always a struggle. I find that the practical footwear needed often doesn’t pair well with my nicer pieces 🙈 I would probably have ended up in a v-neck sweater, a black mini, tights and chelsea boots. Loved the outfit with leopard pants!
